A Gold Mine

* A single gold ring leaves in its wake at least 20 tons of mine waste.

* Open-pit gold mines essentially obliterate the landscape, opening up vast craters, flattening or even inverting mountaintops, and producing 8 to 10 times more waste than underground mining.

* Cyanide is used by large mining operations to separate gold from ore. Cyanide pollution is a major concern. A rice-grain sized dose of cyanide can be fatal to humans; concentrations of 1 microgram (one-millionth of a gram) per liter of water can be fatal to fish.

* Metals mining employs just 0.09 percent of the global workforce but consumes as much as 10 percent of world energy.

* Between 1995 and 2015, approximately half the gold produced worldwide has or will come from indigenous peoples’ lands.

* Metals mining is the number one toxic polluter in the United States, responsible for 89% of arsenic releases, 85% of mercury releases, and 84% of lead releases in 2004.

* The world’s largest open pit, the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, is visible to astronauts from outer space. It measures 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) deep and 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) across.

* 120,000 tons of toxic waste spilled from the Baia Mare gold mine in Romania in 2000, contaminating the drinking water of 2.5 million people and killing 1,200 tons of fish.

[T]he G.O.P. has come to resemble a Soviet dictatorship  --  a vast majority of Republican politicians can't publicly say what they know about the truth of climate change because they're afraid the thought police will knock on their door and drag them off to an AM radio interrogation.

Yes, the GOP's science denial is so extreme that a major conservative columnist has called out the right wing's "thought police." Nobel laureate economist Paul Krugman used Brooks' line  --  and the Paris climate talks  --  as a launching point for a must-read piece, "Republicans' Climate Change Denial Denial" Friday.

As Krugman explains,"the talks could mark a turning point" toward "the kind of international action needed to avert catastrophe." But he adds: "Then again, they might not; we may be doomed. And if we are, you know who will be responsible:

-- the Republican Party."

David Brooks  --  who is often, but not always, part of that echo chamber  --  explained last week, on the climate change issue:

It's a Through-The-Looking-Glass world. The Washington Post reports Sunday that ExxonMobil has a far saner view of global warming than the national Republican party.

░ Fred Hiatt, the paper's centrist editorial
░ page editor, drops this bombshell:

░ "With no government action, Exxon experts
░ told us during a visit to The Post last week,
░ average temperatures are likely to rise by
░ a catastrophic (my word, not theirs) 5 degrees
░ Celsius, with rises of 6, 7 or even more...
░ ( 9°F to 12°F )

This is indeed basic climate science.

Of course, thanks to excellent reporting by InsideClimate News, we now know ExxonMobil had been told by its own scientists in the 1970s and 1980s that climate change was human-caused and would reach catastrophic levels without reductions in carbon emissions. Yes, this is same ExxonMobil that then became the largest funder of disinformation on climate science and attacks on climate scientists until they were surpassed by the Koch Brothers in recent years  --  but that is a different (tragic) story.

ClimateColab.org Eco Awareness Proposal

Eco Awareness is growing in this generation.

Let's talk now, so that it's not too late, for the next generation: http://EcoDelMar.org

"We are Eco Citizens"... and it's going to take this kind of awareness to change the direction of the empires running this Earth and Oceans into ecological disaster, just for profit... leaving "we the people" out in the storm... and a toxic environment created by a profit motivation over human health. We the people... mostly a worldwide group of adventurous Ocean lovers and recreational scuba diving citizens... becoming the "Eco Ocean Citizens" of this generation... a growing percentage of the people on Earth who care enough about the Ocean, to protect it.

Scuba divers have a first hand opportunity to photograph and bring the current coral reef health conditions to everyone's attention via social media... awareness is step one... only then can the "willingness" take root... no awareness, no problem... out of sight, out of mind... and most of us tend to live in semi blind blissful state of mind unwilling to face the unfolding environmental disaster that could make the great depression look like a picnic... although not even all the scuba divers in the world can protect the coral reefs, if we don't reduce industrial pollution... yet don't want to talk about it... that trillion ton elephant in the room... and this has lead me to this environmental pathway... and reconnecting with the "oneness" of all mother nature... many of us have forgotten our natural reality... blindly in pursuit of an ego-driven "better life"... yet, the materialistic illusion crumbles to dust when you look into the eyes of a dolphin... if we the people don't take this on... who will?... certainly not industry... and who runs the governments... the same industrial polluters... meanwhile another dozen dead dolphins washes ashore... is anybody out there... http://EcoDelMar.org

Years ago i wanted to do something to help protect coral reefs... so i got involved in coral reef restoration... moved to the Florida Keys, got a boat and a USCG captain's license... updated all my underwater equipment... loved all my time on and under water, made tons of underwater digital images and video, made social media websites... and spoke to everyone about the need to protect the coral reefs... it's amazing how many Florida keys residents are unaware of the nature all around them...

The good news is... we can be just as loving as the dolphins: http://EcoDelMar.org/elaine

The bad news is... industrial "profiteers" are slowly killing the only known Living Oceans in the entire universe... and calling it a "good profit": http://EcoDelMar.org/pcb

How ironic that most of the people who are saving the planet are unpaid volunteers... while polluting the planet is done by profiteering corporations that lobby politicians who are highly over paid and actually sworn to an oath to protect the public well-being.

The Blue Miracle Planet... 70% covered by miraculous deep blue water... although the Oceans seem infinite to our eye's view.... in fact all the water on Earth only makes up a precious 0.02% of the Earth's total mass... yet the Oceans give us over half the oxygen we need to live and breathe... without Our priceless Oceans... we will die... No Blue... No Green... for millions of generations we enjoyed the only known living Oceans in the entire universe... and after millions of years on Earth... most humans still wonder where we came from... and now with our newest scientific tools we have determined that the beautiful wonder of nature we call "The Nautilus"... has lived in the Oceans for more than 500 million years... until now... disappearing due to man-made, (anthropogenic) Ocean acidification and a few decades of industrial dumping millions of tons of highly poisonous chemicals into rivers worldwide... just for corporate / share-holder profit.... ignoring the damage to Life's Foundation... ignorance is bliss, short term.... long term, what will Earth's brand new Oceans cost... as if the shareholders could afford one...

More acidic Oceans will dissolve the fragile shells of the pteropods and probably the phytoplankton... and if the phytoplankton goes... there goes 50% of Earth's Oxygen supply... and then even the trees will fail... the frozen tundra with it's mega-tons of methane gas that is 20 time worse than CO2 as a green house gas... what is going to prevent that huge biomass and flammable gas from catching fire... when it does, can anyone put it out... now do you understand the global concern over the rapidly increasing CO2 that is caused by burning fossil fuels... turning the Oceans Acidic... dissolving the fragile shells of the pteropods and phytoplankton... the source of 50% of our Oxygen... phytoplankton is already down 40%... whales are starving to death... seafood is loaded with cancerous industrial chemicals... please tell me if i am wrong... http://EcoDelMar.org/ocean_acidification/

.... To simply stand in awe and truly appreciate the strength and wisdom of the amazing Life energy inside of every tree... thank you to Nature's miracles... that make Life possible for us... every leaf shares it's Life with the tree and gives us Oxygen to breathe... thank you trees... http://EcoDelMar.org/trees

By the time we get to "vote" for enough leaders to protect the environment... it might already be too late...

Thousands of scuba divers can share their visual experience of what's happening to the coral reefs worldwide to help people understand the Oceans are dying from the land based industrial pollution, climate change, and CO2 turning the Oceans more acidic.

"Eco-alarm-bells" would be ringing... if big oil had not silenced the media... and humans are way too good at living "comfortably" in denial... similar to the famous frog experiment that will boil to death if the temperature goes up to a boil very slowly... we humans just don't seem to react until we hear the alarm clock buzzing... even then we hit "snooze"...

If we think the government can solve everything for us... just remember they could not even cap the BP oil well until it ran dry... and have you seen their "chem trail" attempts to cool the planet: http://EcoDelMar.org/chemtrails/

Global business "seems" to make the world-go-round.... and this planet will certainly "go-around" with us or without us... all the other trillions of dead planets spin perfectly, without Life... is there enough real Love for Life on this planet to protect it... does everyone really think this journey to infinity and beyond was just to store some cash in a bank...

When we sincerely think of our Relationship with Nature... knowing that Nature is always sharing Her creations... like the trees that birth from Her seeds... the leaves that give us all clean air and later... falling back to the Earth to continue flowing in the endless eco-cycle... nothing is left out of the cycle... all is created with Love in the cycle... and when we share in this eco-creativity... think of sharing an artist's creativity and your own creativity... both are enhanced... and our Love of the Natural environment we are all a part of... Living in harmony with the Nature we are all One with... this internal and infinite awareness that you share in your Heart with the world... and this does not change with the name of your religion or the label we give to it... or the logo we wear...

If we, supposedly intelligent humans, destroy the source of so much Life in the Universe.... the question is not will we survive... but should we... Can we learn to respect Life in Our Living Oceans before we kill every living creature that has lived a healthy Life for millions of generations long before we arrived to walk upright on land. Are we so egotistically arrogant as to destroy our very own Ocean Home... Do we realize our origins are so much more likely Aquatic than we dare to dream... Rocks were formed in fire... and when struck together, give fire... the Oceans Give Life Itself... and while we have this Gift... dare we stand Lifeless... allowing the destruction of our Aquatic Life Base... with apathetic heads bowed down... to industrial profiteers... who will later tell us they were the "successful" ones... http://EcoDelMar.org

..::" Where Whales are still somewhat numerous — like the Southern Ocean — the whale pump, as it’s known, spreads nitrogen and binds up carbon in an environmentally substantial way. However, with the severe decline of whales worldwide, due to commercial over-hunting — along with the exponentially worsening acidification of our Oceans — the marine ecosystem has suffered a steep tip in its delicate balance. Whales are the Guardians of our precious Oceans, and their poaching only speeds up the impending Ocean acidification. Certainly, whales may not be able to single-handedly solve the problem of our dying Oceans, but these giant mammals have a significant impact on CO2 binding that helps us all to breathe oxygen. Where Whales are gathered in number, there will be healthy photo-synthesizing plankton. The Oceans produce over half the oxygen on Earth. Every other breath you breathe, comes from the phyto-plankton in the Ocean.

via Janette Tingle ..::'' Professor Hans Joachim Schellnhuber of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research were timed to precede the pope's speeches on sustainable development in September to the United Nations and the U.S. Congress. Schellnhuber said "the science is clear: global warming is driven by greenhouse gas emissions." Francis confronted head on both climate change doubters and those who say it is not man-made. "A very solid scientific consensus indicates that we are presently witnessing a disturbing warming of the climatic system," he said. "Humanity is called to recognize the need for changes of lifestyle, production and consumption, in order to combat this warming or at least the human causes which produce or aggravate it." He said greenhouse gases were "released mainly as a result of human activity." Francis called for policies to "drastically" reduce polluting gases, saying technology based on fossil fuels "needs to be progressively replaced without delay" and sources of renewable energy developed.

The well known Dr. Oz called out the US Environmental Protection Agency over the proposed approval of Enlist Duo, a new herbicide mix primarily made of glyphosate (known as Monsanto Roundup) and a new form of 2,4-D (Agent Orange).

This is not the first time that Doctor Oz has given substantial air time to GMO concerns. He has reached out mainly to parents who are discovering the health effects in their children.

Dow Chemical, a lesser known participant in GMO crops, is poised to change the environmental dynamic of corporate farming again with its new combination herbicide.

Filmmaker Penelope Jagessar Chaffer was curious about the chemicals she was exposed to while pregnant: Could they affect her unborn child?

So she asked scientist Tyrone Hayes to brief her on one he studied closely: atrazine, a herbicide used on corn.

Stand With Moby To Save Our Bees [PETITION]

Silently, billions of bees are dying off and our entire food chain is in danger. Bees don't just make honey -- they are a giant, humble workforce, pollinating 75% of growing plants. But in five days the US could move to ban the toxic pesticides that are killing them off.

We know we can get a ban -- after a mega Avaaz campaign last year, the EU banned this group of poisons that multiple scientists blame for bees' rapid demise. Right now chemical companies are furiously lobbying US authorities to stop action. But insider allies say a massive public mandate could tip the scales towards a ban. Let's give it to them! If the US moves, it will set in motion a ripple effect on the rest of the world.

We have no time to lose
-- members of the White House's bee task force will report with proposals on Tuesday. Already 2.5 million of us have backed this campaign. Let's race to send messages to the heads of the task force before Tuesday's meeting. This is not just about saving bees, this is about our survival. Click to send a message now:

"Tuition fees are socially unjust," said Dorothee Stapelfeldt, senator for science in Hamburg, a region which scrapped fees back in 2012. "It is a core task of politics to ensure that young women and men can study with a high quality standard free of charge in Germany."

A spokesman for the Social Democrats (the country´s leading political party) said during Germany´s elections last March: "Tuition fees keep young people from low-income families from studying and are socially disruptive."

"The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby

This song deals with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The line in the lyrics that mentions "The law passed in '64" is the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law was supposed to prohibit discrimination in public places, the government and employment.

The lyrics in this song deal with the need to resist complacency and never resign yourself to racial injustice as the status quo.

The song portrays 1980s America from a critical perspective. The opening verse recounts a story taking place at a line for welfare that illustrate a divide between the rich and poor. The chorus presents several lines insisting that social ills are "just the way it is", and repeatedly suggests resigning oneself to them as a fact of life—however, the chorus ends with the author rebuking this attitude by insisting "ah, but don't you believe them."

The second verse recounts past social issues from the voice of someone supporting racial segregation. The author responds in a narrative voice, insisting his view that if those who make laws took them into careful consideration they would be convinced that laws enforcing principles like racial segregation are morally wrong. The song reminds the listener that it was at one time argued that racial segregation was "just the way it is", and suggests that legislation and what the author views as progress on current social issues should be pursued without regard to those who insist "some things will never change."

The third verse recounts the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a victory in the civil rights movement, but insists that more is needed. The third chorus suggests that it only feels like "some things will never change" when we wait for social problems to change themselves rather than taking steps ourselves to actively change them.
