Sep 19, 2010 - Damn, as involved and committed as this guy is to his tank, he should go SPS. Has a top notch skimmer, 24/7 water changes, nice controller, etc. It could go from a nice tank to THE tank! From last episode....why not run GFO instead of that liquid stuff? Also, why no refugium? (unless I missed it in one of the episodes)

Sep 26, 2010 - heyy I was wondering what softwere is scot runing with his tank?

lafishguy Says:

Sep 26, 2010 - hey T, It is all controlled through the Neptune Apex controllers built in web interface. No additional software needed.

slief Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - Like Jim mentioned, the software is part of the Neptune Apex controllers built in web interface. No software needed.

slief Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - I do run GFO as well but due to some of the Phospate build up, I needed a little more agressive approach to get the phospates to a managable level. I do have a refugium. It was shown in some of the earlier episodes when we did the sump retrofit.

slief Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - As for SPS.. Been there done that. My tank is acrylic and I am not ready to deal with the calcium build up (again) as well as the fact that I hate testing water and due to all the additives needed to maintain calcium, KH etc, I am just not that excited to go down that path right now. I will likely add some SPS down the line, but right now I am happy with the fish and the soft corals.

jcommerce Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - Cool man...makes sense with the acrylic. Crazy setup! I like it!

jcommerce Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - Cool. I'll have to go back and check the refugium part.

Sep 27, 2010 - hey fishguy. i got a 7 triggerfish on my 125 gallon tank. im thinking about buying protein skimmer and uv sterilizer. my water quality is pretty good without it except ph balance. do you still recomment it?? what is the main reason to have uv sterilizer anyway??? i got a fish only tank with live rock. thanks

lafishguy Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - hey J, niether the protien skimmer or UV unit is a nessecity, but a benefit. the skimmer will drive organics out of the water and the UV will help with 'some' parasites but moreso with potential bacterial blooms.

andy sky Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - what if uv sterilizer kills both bad and good bacteria?? does it kill only the bad bacteria??

lafishguy Says:

Sep 27, 2010 - J, its not selective, but its the free-swimming bacteria that pass through it.

Dec 6, 2010 - With all the fish in their, the fire angle and clown fish are my favorite, beautiful colors.

sprinter144 Says:

Feb 17, 2011 - Maybe I missed it, but did you end up replacing all the sand in the tank? I'm considering doing this in my 55 gallon tank for basically the same reason. Any lessons learned from it?

lafishguy Says:

Feb 17, 2011 - hey S, no we have not replaced all the sand, yet. its been in the tank for quite awhile but its being siphoned out slowly.

Mark TONY Says:

Apr 9, 2012 - for a massive tank with a sophisticated filtration system, and a ton of gismos incorporated into the tank, he doesn't have too many expensive or rare fish, keeps it simple.

Mark TONY Says:

May 10, 2012 - Hey Jim, got a question. that valve Scott has on his protein skimmer which allows him to allow the gunk from the skimmer to flow out, and then close after, I have had a hard time trying to find one of those. Ive been to numerous hardware stores, but havent been able to find a control valve like that in particular. Do you have any ideas?

lafishguy Says:

May 10, 2012 - hey E, Scott's answer is ..... Quick Disconnect Double Valve for Magnum 350 Canister Filter

Mark TONY Says:

May 10, 2012 - Thank you Jim for finding that out for me! Appreciate it.

RockChalkNation1 Says:

Jun 6, 2012 - Does he still have this tank going? Any plans for an update?

lafishguy Says:

Jun 7, 2012 - hey R, yes and no. Scott is battling a serious red slime outbreak.

aquaticGrace Says:

Sep 1, 2012 - hey jim how are things going with the cyano in scots tank unfortunately this happens with rodi water very easy to cure with chemiclean safe for reef softies and stonies i have used it twice now i seem to get these out breaks of cyano a couple times a year about every six months but now with the use of chemi clean haven't seen one in a while don't give up scott you are definitely on the right track.keep moving forward with your reef system
