Duration: 4:56

Description:
Hidden behind an unassuming door in a corner of Tate Britain, Mike Nelson's 'Coral Reef' installation invites visitors to explore a parallel world. It's a claustrophobic construction of rooms and narrow corridors, each with a hint of life but decaying in front of your eyes. The sprawling work was first shown in 2001 at Matt's Gallery in London, and is now part of Tate's collection. In this interview the artist explains the ideas and ideologies behind the work, and tells us why he wants the spectator to feel 'lost in a world of lost people'.

May 11, 2011 - This video does NOT give you an idea of how it feels when you actually walk into the Coral Reef. It is a great work that has to be experienced.

apimms Says:

May 16, 2011 - I was thinking...." is this door part of it ? should I open it ?" and I kept going deeper and deeper...then I realised that I didn't know the way back. The feeling of unease is hard to explain...has to experienced. Really greet installation.

May 19, 2011 - there is a green bulletin board at the end of a hallway, and when pushed on it came open and exposed the whole back of the rooms, a bunch of wood and tools, it was not part of the exhibit, but the strange thing was how really weird the relief I got to suddenly be back in a 'normal' room, I really liked that, I pulled it back shut and went back through, one of the rooms has news paper on the ground, and it smells terrible... I suggest you go visit

Sep 17, 2011 - @TamaraAndTheDemon yes, I was there yesterday

MrElectricBill Says:

Sep 24, 2011 - I found this exhibition completely by accident. The rooms did not feel like they had been created to evoke specific emotions, they simply existed. I realised that all the time I had been reminding myself that it was not real, and I think that was because subconsciously I was frightened by it.

Amy Palmer Says:

Jan 6, 2012 - thatwas part of it i think that sounds like the way out

AriLaLaLaa Says:

Feb 15, 2012 - Visited this today, and was absolutely terrified. I can't even fully explain why, but it was the idea you didn't know what was around the corner I think. There could have been anything there. What was even worse was when I realised that I didn't know the way back.

Pferdesuppe Says:

Jun 7, 2012 - It was a part of the exhibition. If you had chosen the last door, you would have found the "real", intended exit ^^ The rooms right after the exit and the one right before the room you found looked pretty much the same to confuse the visitor. Most people thought that what you found did not belong to the exhibition and were too afraid to take the "real" exit. Instead they went back in order to leave through the entrance.
