Simultaneous Tridacna clam spawning in...

Title: Simultaneous Tridacna clam spawning in RalfP's little coral reef.

Added: Dec 23, 2011

Author: reefralf

Duration: 3:3

Description:
This happens at least 3 times a year, often triggered by a small environmental change. This time, I changed the 4*400W MH bulbs two days prior to this event. One clam started, the others sensed the hormones and joined in. Such a spawning event typically takes about an hour, after another hour, the reef is clean again. Young Tridacna clams act only as a male, older ones also release eggs afterwards, acting as a male and female simultaneously.

Jan 4, 2012 - the 100 hermits also spawn quite often, I can see lots of larvae at night, so there seems to be also a more continuously feeding source ;-)

Jan 4, 2012 - That's great. My snails spawn all the time. Everything in my tank goes crazy over it. Nice set up by the way.

Jan 5, 2012 - your skimmer must have gone nuts... how large is the largest of your maximas? I have been considering buying one of the large french polynesian maximas for a while, but I heard they have poor survivorship. Some seem to think that this is due to inadequate lighting in captivity. Like you, I use 400 W halides. Thoughts?

reefralf Says:

Jan 7, 2012 - @asd24327976, it's ok with the skimmer, just smelling a little strange the next day. The largest T. derasa is a little more than 35cm (14") long. My 400W with 85cm water column is enough for the clams. They only produce eggs if they have enough energy (light), and they do here. As I understood, it's a problem to keep them such a long time in the dark during farm/quarantine/transport/quarantine/stocktanks etc.. There are also some discussions about virus infections and parasites (snails etc.).
