The Life of a Marine Biologist: Coral...

Title: The Life of a Marine Biologist: Coral reefs of Curacao

Added: May 26, 2011

Author: Aaron Hartmann

Duration: 2:39

Description:
This video gives a brief visual introduction to the amazing reefs of Curacao. It is here, in the southern Caribbean, that I perform most of my dissertation research measuring the health of corals. I conduct my research at the CARMABI Foundation (http://www.carmabi.org/) and my work would not be possible without the support of skilled scientists and friends there--in particular Dr. Mark Vermeij and Dr. Kristen Marhaver. All underwater photos were taken by K. Marhaver and M. Vermeij, while above water video and pictures were taken by myself, as well as Elizabeth Keenan and Emily Kelly. The song is Tamacun by Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Jun 11, 2011 - wow, being a Marine Biologist looks awesome! I have LOVED animals my whole life, but lately I have been getting more and more interested in underwater animals! I saw your other video too, it makes me want to be a Marine Biologist!

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Jun 15, 2011 - Great! It's a lot of fun and I definitely recommend it.

Superguy554 Says:

Jul 6, 2011 - So as a Marine Biologist you study the behavior of the animals? such as how they react to certain things? how they behave to certain circumstances? or what exactly do you do as a Marine Biologist?

chelseebabey Says:

Jul 13, 2011 - did you always want to study coral? or as a marine biologist can you specialize in a certain area? could i just study animals (i.e. whales, dolphins, fish etc)

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Aug 3, 2011 - No, I didn't figure out that I wanted to study coral until I got into grad school. All marine biologists have to specialize to a certain extent, but many study multiple organismal groups, like sharks, fishes, and whales. So yes, you could study a variety of critters.

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Aug 3, 2011 - Many marine biologists study animal behavior--both how they act "normally" and how they react to certain disturbances like you suggest. Behavior is just one of the many areas that we collectively study!

Sep 14, 2011 - when i get older i want to be a marine biologist (im 15) cause weve only explored like 3% of the worlds oceans. what else could be in there? 50 ft eels!? the possibilitys are endless!

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Oct 19, 2011 - You're right--there is soooo much that we haven't seen and don't even know exists!

Jared T Says:

Oct 19, 2011 - like the maryana trench! its over 2 miles deep. there could be caves, and those caves have air pockets and we could find new species of anything!

MrLavastar Says:

Oct 19, 2011 - yeah i want to be a marine biologist too. There is so much more to discover. I am almost 15 haha

Cathrine RJ Says:

Oct 22, 2011 - Oh, seriously! This is SO inspirational, I'm 18 now, that means I have to decide studies in a few months, I always knew it was gonna be biology, but marine biology seem interesting!

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Oct 23, 2011 - I'm really glad you liked it! Marine biology is definitely worth checking out--it's an interesting and rewarding field.

HEY Jody Says:

Oct 24, 2011 - im going off to college next year and i want to become a marine biologist soooooooooo bad!!! but there's math involved??? what does math have to do with marine biology??? and is it basic math or complicated math??? r u mainly out in the field or in a lab???? plz reply! i need answers!! =)

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Oct 25, 2011 - It all depends on what you study. For some the math is complicated and for others it's simpler, like using basic geometry. My work doesn't involve a lot of math, but it does involve some statistics. I'm in the field for about two months out of the year and the rest of the time I'm on the computer or in the lab.

aNdrew Ball Says:

Nov 11, 2012 - Whats the typical salary of a marine biologist? Purely for interest,i know its not significant.

Aaron Hartmann Says:

Feb 2, 2013 - There's a huge range, which depends on what type of job it is and where you live. If I had to guess, I'd say anywhere from $25k - $150k USD.
